What is MIFID ?

MiFID, or the Markets in Financial Instruments Directive, is a set of regulations contributing to harmonization of European legislation in the area of transactions of financial products and the integration of the financial markets.
The major objectives of MiFID are promoting competition and transparency of the financial markets on the one hand, and improving protection of consumers on the other.
The Belgian legislator integrated this directive into Belgian law in the form of the ‘Twin Peaks II’ act of 30 July 2013. This act was supplemented with three royal decrees of 21 February 2014. The circular FSMA_2014_02 of 16 April 2014 completed and specified this legislation, which went into effect on 30 April 2014.
