The Belgian Aviation Insurance Company (Aviabel) was founded in 1935. Its shareholders are insurers and re-insurers in the Belgian market. The arrival of commercial and tourist aviation provided opportunity to grow ground for an insurance company specialising in aviation risks.
Aviabel's activities were reduced to a minimum during the Second World War. Civil aviation revived after the war and Aviabel returned to business. At the same time, it launched its re-insurance activities.
By the end of the 20th and beginning of the 21st centuries, Aviabel had become the market leader in the Benelux region. Our company took over portfolios from Josi and De Nederlandse LuchtvaartPool. Aviabel Re and the branch office in Amsterdam were also established.
In 2007, Aviabel moved into premises on the Avenue Louise in Brussels. Five years later, Cécile Coune became CEO of the company.
Aviabel is an important player in the European aviation market and an insurer of the utmost financial solidity. Therefore, the rating agency Standard & Poor's awarded Aviabel its excellent A-rating (stable).
